So graduation is coming up for the seniors this year and i was just wondering how the alumni felt around this time? Was it scary or were you just ready to gtfo or what?

Kinda unsure about the future, but I was pretty much ready to finish up and move on. Huge sense of relief/accomplishment too after handing in my very final paper. But my post-undergrad plans haven't really unfolded as I planned. Never know what will happen I guess.

almost all grads i've ever talked to go through a post-graduation depression. it's usually due to the uncertainty of what they're going to do afterward, loneliness cause their friends have all gone their own ways, unable to find a job, etc.

it really is kinda tricky when you get out of there cause things really do start to fall into a grind (and that's after you find the elusive job). the days start to blur together and you'll likely start to miss being a student. i know people who are still trying to figure out life after ucsd because you really do sometimes feel unfulfilled by what you're doing and yet, can't digress from that path since it's what you've worked toward the last 4 years.

even meeting new people (no less finding a SO) becomes increasingly difficult, depending on what profession you get into. the people you work with are usually all in different phases of their lives and it tends to be hard to gel with them outside of work unless you're lucky enough to meet somebody you really click with. that's why bars and clubs become so popular, but you can never really meet many people you would want to hang out with past that night anyway.

i pessimistically warn that you'll probably go through the same, but who knows. i'm just playing the odds. YMMV but good luck on your journey.

If you think meeting new people is tough at UCSD, try doing it in your new job.

1. Half the cute chicks are married. The other half have fiances
2. The rest of the people are weeeeeeird. I'm used to weird and strange people. I'm weird and strange, but for me to say that about someone else, it means they're really weird :?
3. Loneliness starts caving you in and, if you're not emotionally stable, you're bound to start acting a little crazy yourself.

UCSD prepared me really well for this 8)

congrats c/o 08. When I finished my last final, I had this sense of relief. I went thru these obstacles to get that piece of paper. I call it a reciept for all that money you paid. I wasnt scared of the future. I pretty knew my game plan. Thinking now, I do miss the lesser responsibilities a college student has as opposed to a worker. The life of a student is much better than a life of a worker.

I kind of agree. Bars and clubs are like the McDonalds of meeting people. It's like instant "I want you now!" superficial type of thing. Nothing wrong with them but if you expect long-term happiness at those places, you'll be lonely again.

Many recent graduates start to lose friends slowly and others may have move out of town, got marry, got a job in another state, etc. This creates the empty feeling of wanting something beyond a job -- recognition, understanding, and a sense of accomplishment to the world. After all, 4-year of university should make us feel we can change the world. But the real-world hits us hard, and so we try to seek more meaning in our lives. I would suggest -- volunteering in a big organization or attending big networking events, where your service can help people. Plus, you get to meet like-minded people and the relationship are more meaningful. And this is a good way to meet new people, if you're the type of person who do not need to drink beer to make friends.

Yeah pretty much nobody misses UCSD as such. It's the combination of structure and the concentration of lots of single, young people that are missed. Well, that and the huge rafts of free time you can create by ditching class.

i can almost taste the relief of being an alumni

to those that made it through "the system" (sans grad school, etc.) doesn't it feel nice to wake up and know that you don't have to hurry up for class or have to study for some exam/assignment around the corner?

of course, this worry will be replaced with real-world worries (i.e. finding a job and place to live) but for me right now, i'm just taking it one step at a time 8)

school boy problems such as hurrying to class pales in gravity to "real-world" problems

Agreed. Those weren't my largest worries when I was at UCSD and I still look back on those worries fondly now.

WTF are you talking about? I have to wake up even earlier, every day, and rush into work and am constantly chasing much bigger, nastier deadlines than any exam/assignment I ever had in school. And unlike school, you don't get a break after those deadlines - you just get another bigger, badder deadline. And you don't get to reboot every 11 weeks - if I have a bad couple of weeks now, its effect isn't constrained to a single sub-optimal grade in a single class; it chases me indefinitely, until I can put in enough work to make up for it.

What you're talking about is not "the real world" but "vacation." And, yes, vacation is nice. I wish I had some time to take one.

Oh, goody. I have the combined stress of work and school... and when I say "school," I mean dreadfully dry and boring classes far, far, faaaar away from the academically-lazy, braindead courses of poli psych and liberal arts. I take the way an existentialist would and just do these pointless things to pass the time for kicks with the attitude that I have nothing to lose 8)

Vacation? I have about 400 hours on the books! Hahah. I can check out any time, but there is no point for vacation either.

haha you're right. my situation is pretty much the same except i won't be sitting in a classroom in january.

Don't get me wrong though, I know the real world is definitely much harder than school. It's just that I want to move on to that stage now, whether I'm ready or not 8)

really? the only reason why i had a "GTFO" mentality as i approached the end of my undergrad experience was because i want to do things that i kept putting off (or making excuses) because of school.

time to catch up on movies/anime/manga, the gym**, re-arranging/organizing stuff in the house, etc etc.

Whatever you had no time to do because of school, you will definitely have no time to do because of work. However, with work, you will be able to afford things (just not the time to enjoy them) 8)

Hey, speaking of things, The Right Stuf, Intl. is having another year-end blow out that ends today. I blew about $300 catching up on some next-gen anime 8)

http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/

This, plus the 600 I've already spent at Amazon on movies, music, and books, should tide me over 'til next year 8)

True, but you do get deprived of the rationale for delaying them. There's no "another year or two till graduation" horizon, so you can't fool yourself that you'll make time later. You're either going to make time or you aren't, and there's no point in delaying the decision.

Although the upshot of that is mostly that you'll be forced to conclude that you won't ever have time to do this stuff, and so you just give it up entirely instead of pretending you'll get around to it after finals. But maybe you do finally prioritize the one or two really important things you'd been delaying (especially if they cost real money).

tbh guys i wished i smoked more weed in college. i wished i smoked more during dorm hall first year. i would've just toked all day, play Desert Combat (a battlefield 1942 mod) all day, hook up my desktop to the projector in the dorm lobby to play CS, and used mIRC (tmdmoviez) and/or BitComet to DL all the shit i want while playing all the games i want. that and wished i had more booze connects so there would always be a 40 oz in my mini fridge in teh dorms for anybody in teh hall who wanna chill and smoek weed, play CS 1.6. or Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, etc. yea, college would've been better with more weed and booze.
